13 Ways to Look at a Light
By: Emmanuel Lyons, 7th Grade, PPAS, Brooklyn, NY

The light turns on and it gives you a comfort

A comfort greater than any mother could ever give

A comfort that will never leave.

The light says to you things that make you feel its loving embrace

But then it finds a way for you to hate it

Just to love it all over again.

You look at the light, deeply

And you wonder what’s on the other side

But, you fear that it is something the light doesn’t want you to see.

The light blinds your vision

So you can’t see its secrets

Secrets that can kill you.

The light may also guide you in the way you must go

The way you may not want to go

But must.

The light is a beauty that is confusing,

Yet amusing

And goes unnoticed.

But in the souls of many, the light is a tool

Used

For their own gain.

The light fights a constant battle

A battle I admire, cherish, and love

A battle that will never be won.

The light gives wisdom that cannot be taught

A wisdom so strong

It keeps you your whole life.

The light, to so little people, is just a light

But they cannot see

The beauty of the light.

We need the light

But overlook it

As something minor in our lives.

The light is in constant motion

Never stopping to admire its beauties

So, I do it for the light.

But when the light leaves

We are left in darkness

And we become nothing.
