In The Heights
A Flavorful Latin American Show

In the Heights is about a young man named Usnavi played by Lin-Manuel Miranda . It focuses on his friends and neighbors in the uptown New York City neighborhood of Washington Heights. The set looked like a real city street with graffiti and dark colored buildings. Usnavi and his friends bring color and life to this dark background as they each overcome obstacles. Usnavi’s struggles to try different things  to make life better for himself, but it doesn’t initially have the desired outcome.

The show was a bit of Spanish mixed with English. I don’t speak any Spanish, but I felt like I always understood what they were saying. The actors physical and vocal expression made it easy to understand and pinpoint their emotions.

In the Heights is a flavorful Latin American show. The choreography is original, with a splash of "wow" factor. The music is really catchy! “Piragua” was stuck in my head all the way home. It was also very funny and it will definitely get at least one big laugh out of you. In the Heights had its New York City debut as an Off Broadway musical but it is currently playing  in the Richard Rodgers theater where I saw it get a standing ovation! I would recommend In the Heights to families. It is definitely one of the best Broadway musicals I have ever seen.
