13 is a coming of age story that focuses on a boy named Evan, and the situations he must deal with on the way to becoming a teenager. He lives in New York City with his mom and dad. Evan is Jewish, and is busy planning his upcoming Bar Mitzvah. (A Bar Mitzvah is when a Jewish boy becomes a man at the age of 13). Then, all of the sudden, Evan’s parents get a divorce, and he is forced to move to Appleton, Indiana with his mother. There, Evan has to go to a new school and make new friends that will come to his Bar Mitzvah. He becomes friends with his next door neighbor and her friend, but also tries to become friends with the popular crowd.
Although 13 is not based on a true story it does cover very real issues that teenagers go through. Most teenagers that see this show will be able to relate to some of the issues that the characters must deal with. Whether it is with your parents getting divorced, moving to a new school, having to make new friends, trying to discover your self identity or having to plan your Bar Mitzvah.
Personally, I can relate to the play and what Evan is going through. Not only will I welcome the teenage years in next month, but because I too will be planning my Bat Mitzvah and studying really hard for it.
What works about 13 is it deals with everyday teenage issues in a fun way. It is a play for people of all ages. The songs and the play itself are so entertaining. All of the actors are great and full of energy. Everything about the way 13 explores the teenage years is realistic, including that it is the only play on Broadway that ever had a full teenage cast and band. They even sign autographs after every show. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves Broadway.
