We had the opportunity to interview bubble artist Ana Yang after a recent performance of her Gazillion Bubble Show at New World Theater in Manhattan. She has performed worldwide and is considered one of the most unique artists in the entertainment industry. Currently, she is a Guinness World Record holder for putting a bubble over 26 people.
How many shows have you done? You have to love the bubbles and I love my show. We try to experiment with new things to bring to the show. So would you describe this as a show of imagination?
When did your love for bubbles begin?
I met my husband as a teenager and did not know he was a bubble enthusiast. I have been doing this for twenty years and learned from him.
Yes, your husband Fan is also an artist. How did he get started?
He was a very young boy and someone blew a small bubble that landed on the kitchen counter. It stayed there for so long he started thinking. He took a straw and put it in and it started to expand, expand and expand. He then started thinking bubbles can make a lot of things. He tried different things around the clock and didn't sleep.
Did he invent this show?
All this show he invented. Some of the things we combined together.
How many years did it take you to learn this?
It took me five to ten years. These bubbles are part science, physics and art. You have to combine them to become a good bubble artist.
What do people say when you tell them that you do this for a career?
My husband is in Korea right now. He does two shows. Korean people like it. The first year they didn't know what it is. More and more they realize bubbles make them dream and happy. They like it same as they like it here.
More than 1,000. Here in New York we have eight shows a week. Sometimes I have done as many as five shows a day.
Do you get stage fright?
One time in my life when my husband brought me on stage. I was sixteen and froze for two seconds, but then followed my husband and was happy to do the show.
How many bubbles do you make for each performance?
We can't count! That's why we call it 'Gazillion.' Millions of bubbles can come out in one show. Bubbles can transform in many different ways so you don't know what to expect.
What do you do to keep yourself energetic for each performance?
Is there anything new that is going to be added?
We are practicing. Bubbles transform - you see something different each time you see the show. We can do many forms of bubbles, but it depends on what the audience can easily see. That is why we choose the most difficult and nice way people can understand.
Bubbles is one part imagination, the second thing an act; third thing is a childhood because we all played with bubbles and they are beautiful.
OK, so when you are on stage does it bring the kid out of you?
Yes! I really feel like a kid. I don't feel like an adult. When kids enjoy it, it makes me feel like a kid.
Is this what you like the most about doing the show?
I enjoy the kids. The kids make me happy. If I make the kids happy it makes me happy too.
How many countries have you performed in?
This is the first year I have been in New York, but from Asia to Europe to South Africa to the four continents - almost everywhere.
Any country that you prefer to perform in?
Every country expression is different. It depends on what knowledge of bubbles that country has. Some countries don't know about bubbles, so they have a different joy.
You have the Guinness World Record for putting 26 people inside a bubble. Did you ever try to surpass that?
We are planning on having another Guinness - over 100 people. We are planning on doing it in the Fall or near Christmas.
What year did you beat the record?
2004
